Group B Strep
Brandwood Clinic provides screening for Group B Strep. The cost for the test is just £58* and includes a quick health check for Mum too. All testing is done as per the Gold Standard HPA BSOP58 guidance as an ECM (Enriched Culture Method).
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of life threatening infections in newborn babies in the UK.
If the test is positive, simple antibiotics are given by your delivery team at the onset of labour. This use of antibiotics reduces the likelihood of early onset GBS infection in a baby delivered by a mother carrying GBS at the time of delivery from around 1 in 300 to less than 1 in 6000. The test should be done during weeks 35 to 37 of pregnancy.
Testing for GBS infection is not generally available by the NHS, despite routine screening being provided in most other European countries and the USA. Gold Standard testing is available at Brandwood Clinic for £58.
At your appointment, after a brief chat, you will be given some instructions to take two swabs yourself: a lower vaginal and a rectal swab. You will of course be given privacy to do this. We will then discuss the plan you would need to take should a positive result come back and you will receive your final result by text message, email or post (or all 3 if you prefer) within approximately 3 working days.
*Subject to availability. The test is available without health check at a reduced price
